The county does not publish a sheriff records email, records-unit hours, photo fee, or guaranteed production time. Call first for the current custodian and accepted request method. Public-service walk-in hours shown for registration and inspections should not be treated as records-office hours.
County Open Records Policy
The County Clerk publishes Smith County’s general open-records policy, form, and fee schedule. The Clerk is not automatically the custodian of jail records, so a jail request should still be routed through the Sheriff.

General listed charges include $0.25 per letter or legal page, $0.50 per oversize page, $0.25 per fax page, $25 per CD, and research or preparation at $20 per hour or the employee’s actual rate, whichever is higher. Confirm the estimate and whether this schedule applies to the record requested.

Smith Center Municipal Court is a separate city path. Questions go to 785-282-3249. Court generally meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Srader building unless the city states otherwise.

Supervision and Notification
KDOC’s current table routes Smith County supervision questions to a regional office in Hays. Check the person’s KASPER entry first because residence and office assignment can change.

Ask the Sheriff about a Smith County jail stay or transfer. Ask the proper court about the order behind release. Use KDOC and KASPER for a Kansas prison sentence, and the regional office for an active supervision route. Federal prison questions belong with BOP; civil immigration custody belongs with ICE. Emergencies require 911, not a records office or this site.
